Saint George's Day

Saint Georges Day
We're all going red for St George's Day!
Saint George - Patron Saint of England who stands for honour, bravery and gallantry. Legend has it that George slayed a dragon in order to save an innocent maiden. But what else do we know about him? The Patron saint of England is a very mysterious character and not much is really known about him. He's not even English!
Facts About Saint George
- Born in Turkey
- Lived in Palestine
- Was a Roman Soldier who fought against the persecution of the Christians which resulted in him being beheaded
- 23 April became Saint George's Day in 1222
- Became the Patron Saint of England in 1415
- Also the Patron Saint of Portugal, Greece and Germany and many other European towns
- Saint George's Day was once as important as Christmas Day and treated as a national holiday; however in 1778, April 23rd became a simple day of devotion for Catholics and the national holiday was taken away
- The first Saint George's cross was awarded in 1940 by King George VI for 'acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger'.
Red Lips and Polish to Match

Barry M lipsticks

Barry M Nail Polish
So grab your red lippy and red nail polish and celebrate Saint George's Day in style! Barry M does a lovely range of red polishes. My favourite is the glitter red (no 150) or you may be more daring and go for a real bright red like Number 262. Lipsticks are just as colourful - from a deep dark red to a real dangerous looking bright red. The Choice is yours!

Male Grooming is Booming
Selina's Weekly Beauty Tips
Lock in Moisture
After taking a shower, apply your moisturisers to your face and body while it's still wet. This will help to lock in moisture. The male grooming industry is now booming with 20% of men visiting beauty salons on a regular basis; sales of male beauty products in the UK have risen by a third in 5 years while sales of male skincare products have increased by 900%. And about time too! Why shouldn't men look after their bodies and themselves while indulging in a little luxury every now and then?

Men Need to Feel Good too
Men want soft skin too and fewer wrinkles - they have the same hang-ups as women however much they try to deny it. What with style icons like David Beckham and Jonny Wilkinson openly taking care of themselves, it is becoming more acceptable to have that facial or manicure. Jonny Wilkinson told the BBC Money Programme, "It's not about being girlie or feminine. It's about looking after yourself". FHM, one of the UK's leading men's magazines urges its readers to indulge themselves, stating that self pampering is not a crime (March 2005). And do not forget Chelsea's 1-0 win against Blackburn Rovers, when Chelsea players celebrated by baring all their freshly waxed chests! With influence coming from all directions, the pressure is on to look good!
This week, Chiltern 96.9's Paul 'News' Hutchinson reported the increase in popularity of male treatments at beauty salons. So where did he go to see what all the fuss was about? Well, it's Beauty of Bedford! (Of course.) Paul had his first ever manicure and really loved it! He said he would definitely come back for more. Once you've broken down that barrier that stops you entering a beauty salon, you will be hooked. It's not a luxury anymore, more of a necessity, and not just for the ladies. We all have stressful lives, be that if you are male or female, so why not unwind with a relaxing facial or back massage?
Looking after yourself is not simply about stealing your wife's/girlfriend's/sister's/mother's moisturizer, there are major differences between a man and a woman's skin that need to be addressed when choosing skincare. On average, a man's skin is twice as thick as that of a woman. Because of this, there are many creams on the market that simply do not have the power to penetrate the thickness of a man's skin. The creams sit on the surface of the skin, acting like an incubator. The warmth builds up creating a perfect home for bacteria which results in spots as the bacteria mixes with the skin's sebum. That's why we recommend Karin Herzog OxyGENT programme.

Why are Karin Herzog Products so Good for a Man's Skin

Treatments Especially for Men
The power of the oxygen in Karin Herzog creams, enable water, oxygen and vitamins to reach the parts of the dermis that other creams simply cannot do. Working from the inside out, Karin Herzog creams stimulate cellular production and collagen elasticity leaving your skin glowing and younger looking. Karin Herzog creams have the power to eliminate razor burn and reduce in-growing hairs (a major problem for today's males where the hair is simply too weak to push through the thickness of the skin and so keeps growing underneath, sometimes becoming infected). Blemishes and breakouts are also reduced as spots and bacteria cannot survive in an oxygenated area. And don't forget that oxygen sterilizes cuts and accelerates the healing process, so if you do cut yourself shaving, don't worry!
We recommend the Karin Herzog Aftershave Balm. Designed especially for men with a subtle citrus fragrance from natural fruit oils, this aftershave balm will refine, heal, replenish, hydrate and normalise skins. A must have for all clean shaven men which really does help in getting rid of those in-growing hairs.
We have a range of facial and body treatments at Beauty of Bedford, especially for men but you are free to try any other treatments in our salon. The chocolate facial is an experience not to be missed and men like chocolate too! We also provide back and chest waxes - ideal now that summer is almost here (hopefully, anyway) and then we also have our fake bake tanning system.
